Can I have a modern adoption?
Adoption has come a long way even in the last 25 years! Women now have a choice over the families looking to adopt; women can choose the level of closed or open adoption they like. It was not always like that, though. For many, there was guilt, shame, and pressure from family when considering unexpected pregnancy options. If you are looking for an adoption consultant or adoption agency in Alabama, you’ll want to find one that follows these modern adoption practices:
Local worker who has a personal relationship with you
You deserve to work with an agency that wants to get to know you, your heart, your goals for both you and your child, and your hopes and fears related to adoption. This person will walk with you through the process, be sure you feel confident and informed, and advocate for you and the best interest of the child. She can help you get to your doctor’s appointments, connect you to community resources, help get you health insurance, and more. You’re able to contact a local pregnancy counselor through text, call, chat, or email; we are available 24/7 for your support.
Adoptive parents who want a relationship with you
Lifeline works with families and couples looking to adopt who also want to have a relationship with you! Each one of our families is comfortable with an open adoption. Open adoption can look different, depending on what you would like, but this means that you can decide how much of a relationship you want. If you’d like letters and photos, or a visit with your child each year, you can decide that and let your pregnancy counselor know so that the families you see are ones who also want that level of relationship!
At Lifeline, if a birthmother desires to have a closed adoption then we will honor and respect this decision. We still ask the adoptive parents to send updates, and we keep them filed in case she one day changes her mind.
Full choice of the family who raises your child
As long as you want to, you should have the full ability to choose what’s important to you about the family who raises your child. You can tell your pregnancy counselor what matters to you most, whether that’s how many children they have, activities that are important to them, or whether or not they love animals – if it’s important to you, we will include it in your preferences for a family. Each of the families you’ll see have been personally approved by our workers; we know these families and can stand by their education and home study process. All of our families care about the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs of a child. We have many families who are able to adopt children with special needs or drug history during pregnancy. As you look for an agency, make sure to find one that will let you choose the family and what you want in a family, and who knows their families personally.
Lifelong post-adoption support
Not only do modern adoption agencies provide support to you while you are pregnant, they are there for you for the rest of your life. Lifeline offers events, an online community, and a listening ear to all of our birthmothers and birthfathers. If you’d like to know what this support could look like, ask your pregnancy counselor what kind of support Lifeline offers after the adoption is complete.
Choosing to place your child for adoption is one of the biggest decisions of your life — choosing the best adoption agency to help you can make it a smoother, easier process. You will feel informed at each point in the process and free to change your mind at any time. We commit to never making you feel pressured or stuck, but always helping you think through your other options.
